Centralised monitoring of SGB leak detectors
Connected fuel systems allow operators to monitor equipment through a common interface. The SGB Modbus module provides a communication link between a compatible leak detector and a higher-level monitoring system, allowing operating information and alarm statuses to be collected and processed centrally.
This can be particularly useful for data centres, hospitals, generator installations, fleet depots, forecourts and other sites where tank and pipework monitoring forms part of a wider control system.
Benefits for operators and maintenance teams
- Central visibility: view information from connected leak detectors through your BMS, PLC or SCADA system.
- Prompt fault response: make alarm information available to the people responsible for responding.
- Operating insight: monitor pressure, pump activity and other available detector information.
- Maintenance planning: use operating data and trends to support service decisions.
- Remote monitoring: access detector information through your receiving system where remote access has been implemented.
- Retrofit capability: add connectivity to compatible existing equipment.
What information can be transmitted?
The available information depends on the leak detector model, version and configuration.

Modbus communication options
Select the interface required by your monitoring system. SGB offers Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP and combined interface options, subject to the detector and module configuration.
| Interface |

| Modbus RTU |
RS-485 serial communication. |
| Modbus TCP/IP |
Ethernet connection via RJ45. |
| Combined RTU and TCP/IP |
RS-485 and RJ45 interfaces, where specified. |
Modbus integration for new installations
For a new installation, specify the required Modbus interface when selecting your SGB leak detectors. This allows communication requirements to be considered alongside the tank or pipework application and the wider control-system design.
Provide PFS with the proposed detector models, the equipment being monitored and the communication interface required by your BMS, PLC or SCADA system.
Retrofitting existing SGB leak detectors
A retrofit module can add communication capability to a compatible existing SGB leak detector, bringing established equipment into a central monitoring system.
Compatibility must be checked before ordering. SGB checks the detector and software version and configures the Modbus board according to the detector serial number. Some installations may require further changes.
What to send us for a retrofit enquiry
- Leak detector model and serial number.
- A clear photograph of the detector identification plate.
- The detector software version, if known.
- The required interface: Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP or both.
- Details of the receiving BMS, PLC or SCADA system.
- The operating information and alarm statuses you want to monitor.
Integration and software requirements
The SGB Modbus module provides the communication interface between the leak detector and the higher-level system. Software implementation, visualisation and further processing of the data are carried out by the customer, plant operator or system integrator.
Your receiving system determines how the information is displayed, logged and used, including alarm notifications, remote access and maintenance analysis. Operating data can provide a basis for predictive-maintenance applications where these are implemented by the system integrator.
Use the relevant SGB Modbus documentation to configure communication and interpret the data available from your detector.
Technical documentation
SGB provides an English Modbus module manual and an enquiry questionnaire to support module selection and integration.
